Like many games that will appear on this list, Mega Man 2 was a giant piece of my childhood. So here goes… this is RetroDodo’s best 2D video games of all time! I’m honored to give you guys and gals my list of bests, and hopefully you’ll find a classic game to revisit or maybe even be inspired to check out one you never played before. I think I speak for everyone here at Retro Dodo when I say that 2D video games make up a gigantic portion of my gaming memories, starting back on the NES and Game Boy and continuing even now on the Switch, PS5, and PC.
There have been thousands of classic video games in two dimensions, and it is now my important responsibility to determine some of the best.
The criteria of 2D does eliminate some of my favorite video games of all time (Breath of the Wild, Eastward, The Last of Us, etc).Īnd, it surprised me to see how many of my favorite games were 3D or used isometric and top-down perspectives, taking them out of the possibilities (for this exercise, we do not consider those to be 2D). This is going to be one of the most exciting lists I have had the privilege to rank: it’s the best 2D video games of all time!
